Wi-Fi Calling Abroad: How to Call Canada Cheaply (2026)

Does Wi-Fi Calling work abroad on Bell, Rogers or Telus? What each carrier allows, what calling Canada from abroad costs, and the free app-based options.

ArriGo team 5 min read

Whether a call home is free or costs you a roaming day comes down to one thing: who your Canadian carrier is. Rogers lets Wi-Fi Calling work abroad. Bell and Telus don't. Everyone can fall back on app calls, which cost only data.

$0Rogers Wi-Fi call to a Canadian number, from your plan's minutes
~1 MBper minute of a WhatsApp or FaceTime Audio voice call
$13–18a typical carrier roaming day, if a call triggers it

Wi-Fi Calling routes an ordinary call from your own Canadian number over the internet instead of a cell tower. In Canada it fills gaps indoors. Abroad, it could let you call home as if you never left, but each carrier decides whether to allow that.

Works abroad

Rogers

Rogers' Wi-Fi Calling terms say that outside Canada, calls and texts to Canadian numbers and all incoming calls come out of your plan, with no long-distance or roaming charge. Calls to non-Canadian numbers follow your roaming option, and on Roam Like Home they can trigger the daily fee. Rogers' terms

Canada only

Bell

Bell's support page says Wi-Fi Calling is only available within Canada, and Wi-Fi calls to places outside Canada carry standard long-distance charges. Plan on app calls or a roaming pass. Bell's FAQ

Canada only

Telus

Telus says Wi-Fi Calling is only available in Canada. Abroad, calls go over cellular roaming: Easy Roam, a travel pass or pay-per-use. Telus travel calling

Flanker and budget brands set their own rules, even when they run on the same network as their parent company. Look up your provider's support page before you leave.

A week of calls, three ways

Picture a typical week: a few short calls to family, one long catch-up, and a handful of calls to hotels or tour operators at your destination.

Route Calls to Canada Calls to local businesses Good for
App calling over travel eSIM data Data only, about 0.5 to 1 MB a minute Only if they use WhatsApp (common in Europe, Latin America and much of Asia) Most travellers
Rogers Wi-Fi Calling over Wi-Fi or eSIM data Plan minutes, no roaming fee Roaming option applies Rogers customers who need their own caller ID
Carrier daily roaming pass $13 to $18 for each day you use the phone Included in the pass Heavy callers on short trips
Pay-per-use roaming Often several dollars a minute Per-minute rates Avoid if you can

A 20-minute WhatsApp voice call uses roughly 10 to 20 MB, so even a daily call home for two weeks stays well under 1 GB. Our travel data guide shows how calls fit into a whole trip’s data budget.

Set it up at home

  1. Install the travel eSIM and label it, for example "Travel". Our guide covers installing an eSIM before you fly.
  2. Keep your Canadian line on, with data roaming off. Make the travel eSIM the line for mobile data, with data roaming on.
  3. Rogers only: turn on Wi-Fi Calling for your Canadian line (Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone, or the SIM settings on Android).
  4. On iPhone, consider "Allow Cellular Data Switching". Apple's Dual SIM guide explains that it lets the line not used for data still use Wi-Fi Calling over the other line's cellular data, where the carrier supports it. Without it, Wi-Fi Calling only works on real Wi-Fi.
  5. Sign in to WhatsApp and Signal while you're still in Canada. They verify your number by SMS, which is awkward to receive abroad.
  6. Record an away greeting on voicemail that tells callers how to reach you instead.

The line settings on iPhone, Samsung and Pixel are in our guide to keeping your Canadian number with Dual SIM.

When your Canadian number rings

This is where people get caught. If a call reaches you over a foreign cellular network, answering it can count as a roaming day even if you did nothing else.

Rogers with Wi-Fi Calling on: incoming calls come out of your plan, no roaming charge. Bell and Telus: incoming calls arrive over roaming, and answering can start the daily fee. Any carrier: let it go to voicemail. Visual voicemail may or may not work abroad; dialling in is a roaming call.

If you rarely need to answer, forward your number to voicemail and ask family to use an app. Banks and clinics can text you instead: texts still arrive with Dual SIM, which matters for 2FA codes.

Which app for which country

App calling only works when the other person has the same app. Easy with family, but it decides how you reach local businesses.

App Strengths Watch out for
WhatsApp Used by many hotels, drivers and tour operators in Europe, Latin America, India and Southeast Asia SMS verification when you first sign up
FaceTime Audio Clear audio between Apple devices, no extra app iPhone, iPad and Mac only
Signal Encrypted, light on data Few local businesses use it
Google Meet Any phone or laptop, good for work calls Each person needs an account or a link
LINE Common in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand Rare in Canada
KakaoTalk Standard in South Korea Rare elsewhere

Some countries restrict internet calls: the UAE has limited many voice apps for years, and mainland China blocks most Western ones. Check the Government of Canada’s travel advice for your destination.

Not over the internet

Emergency calls go on the mobile network: 112 across the EU, 911 in the US and Mexico, 110 or 119 in Japan. Any phone can reach them without a working plan, and Rogers says Wi-Fi Calling emergency calls won't connect outside Canada and the US. Bank fraud lines often only call or text your registered number, so keep that line on. More first steps are in our guide to landing abroad with no internet.

Our pick by carrier

Rogers: Wi-Fi Calling for calls to Canada from your own number, an app for everything else, and eSIM data so it works away from hotel Wi-Fi.

Bell or Telus: app calls for family and businesses, Canadian line on for texts with data roaming off, and a roaming day only for the one call you can't make another way.

Lots of local calls: compare a carrier day pass with a local prepaid SIM.

Still wondering

Will my Canadian number still ring if I use a data-only travel eSIM?

Yes, if you keep your Canadian line switched on in Dual SIM. Incoming calls then reach you through your carrier's roaming network, which may trigger its daily roaming fee when you answer. Many travellers let calls go to voicemail and call back over an app.

Why was I charged long distance on a Wi-Fi call to Canada?

Rogers warns that a VPN, a DNS service or an internet provider set to a country outside Canada can lead to long-distance or international messaging charges on Wi-Fi Calling. Turn the VPN off before calling and check your bill after the first day.

Can I call 911 or 112 with Wi-Fi Calling abroad?

Do not rely on it. Rogers says emergency calls made over Wi-Fi Calling outside Canada and the US will not connect. Emergency calls abroad should go over a mobile network, which any phone can reach even without a working plan.
